I actually took it easy and only attended a few very special events such as the official celebration of Bastille Day that started with wreath laying by the Statue of Jeanne d'Arc on Decatur Street by Hon. Consul General of France, Jean- Claude. Brunet. That evening I attended the very delightful party hosted by the consul general at the Williams Research Center. I left early to attend the annual Gala of the VCPORA: Vive Le France at the Cabildo. So many parties and so little time but I enjoyed both of them a great deal.
I ended this week by attending at the Museum of American Cocktail's Mixology Masters of New Orleans. It was wonderful to start the week of Tales of the Cocktail, mingling with the bartenders who are turning the Crescent City into a Mecca of Mixology! One of the great forces in reviving New Orleans is the reinvigoration of its bar industry through celebrating the city’s unique cocktail lore and traditions at its finest dining establishments. My darling friend Dale DeGroff, Mixologist extraordinaire, aka “King of the Cocktail” and President and Founder of the Museum of the American Cocktail at the Riverwalk and his lovely wife Jill were present as well. Jill DeGroff, author of "Lush Life; Portraits from the Bar", just publish another book in which I am included. She collects interesting faces and great tales from cafes and bars around the world. She has, in fact, drawn portraits and collected stories from hundreds of characters over the years, including bartenders, musicians, writers, artists, chefs, gypsies, dancers, pirates, and other denizens of the nightjust wrote a second book in which I am included.
Talking about great news , I must congratulate the Windsor Court Hotel that rose 26 spots to be named the #6 Big City Hotel in the US and Canada in Travel + Leisure's 2011 World's Best Awards survey. This ranking, based on reader responses, evaluates rooms, location, service, food and value.
I must also congratulate Executive Chef of the Grill Room: Drew Dzejak since he is one of Louisiana Cooking's Chefs to Watch 2011. The others are Cory Bahr, Executive Chef, Restaurant Sage, Monroe, and 102 A Bistro, Ruston; Nathan Gresham, Executive Chef-Owner, Beausoleil, Baton Rouge; Phillip Lopez, Executive Chef, Rambla, New Orleans; Colt Patin, Executive Chef, Crawfish Town USA, Henderson.
Congratulations to all of them .They will be honored on August 22 at Chefs to Watch 2011 Awards Dinner at Harrah's Theatre. Not to be missed!
This week coming up is one of those weeks that I wish will never end because it is the annual Tales of the Cocktail Week.
I am going to start my week by attending the luncheon at the WTC that is presenting on Tuesday, the 2011 C. Alvin Bertel Award to Capt. Allen J. Gibbs President, Crescent River Port Pilots Association at Luncheon. It should be a lot of fun. Of course, I am looking forward to my annual Round Table saluting Tales of the Cocktail on Wednesday, July 20 at noon at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, to be followed by a second-line parade to the Monteleone Hotel where the Kick-off party of Tales of Cocktail will take place.(Check out all the details in the calendar)
That evening my brother artist Lorenzo Bergen will be once again having an art exhibit at the lobby of the J W Marriot from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Not to be missed.
From there on, I will be totally immersed in Tales of the Cocktail but I am taking time off to be a guest speaker across the lake. I have been invited to be the keynote speaker on Thursday, July 21 at the “Women of Infinite Possibilities (W.I.P.) Women's Day Out! -Reach for the Stars.” It should be fun and I am looking forward to it.
Darlings, wishing you a spirited week and check out all the fun events that this very special week has to offer.
