brees-panthersCan the New Orleans Saints owner possibly be biting the hand that feeds him?

According to a report by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports and other reports, the NFLPA requested NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell look into if the Saints have been negotiating in good faith with Drew Brees with less than three weeks before the July 16 deadline.

The reports question whether or not Brees' visible work as part of the union during the lockout is now working against him as he seeks a multi-year deal from the Saints. While Brees and club officials, whenever probed, have suggested a deal will get done, time is running out.

La Canfora writes that the NFLPA is also prepared to file a claim with the National Labor Relations Board if the NFL does not look into the matter involving Brees. The mission by the NFLPA was not sparked by Brees, either. It would be somewhat surprising if the league jumped in the middle of this situation. But then again, what hasn't been surprising about the offseason for the Saints?

Brees, who has broken important NFL passing records has been the heart and soul of the New Orleans Saints team which has come back miraculously from the Katrina  "dead".

He's heading to Philadelphia on Wednesday for his grievance hearing before Richard Burbank concerning his franchise tag status. Brees is in New York this week being interviewed by the national media.

He wrote on his Twitter feed that he taped an episode of The Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday. Hopefully, he won't sign his new contract before Thursday night.

Brees has said he's optimistic about working out a long-term contract with the Saints and there's no way he'll sit out a season, which will be good news to the Who Dat Nation who are concerned about their quarterback not playing this season.

Drew Brees was on the Mike & Mike Show on ESPN Tuesday morning and said he is still optimistic he will sign a long-term contract with the Saints.

"Negotiations are complicated," said Brees. Brees was asked if he was involved in the negotiations or is his agent, Tom Condon, handling the negotiating with Saints GM Mickey Loomis.

"I know exactly what's going on," answered Brees.

The Saints have a July 16 deadline to sign Brees. After that, there can be no more negotiating for a long-term contract. Brees can either sign the franchise tag contract or sit out the season.

SOME hither, others yon: Athlon Sports is out with a list of the top 25 Heisman Trophy contenders for 2012. LSU CB Tyrann "Honey Badger" Mathieu is not on the list, but he made the Best of the Rest list. Since 1950, only once has a non-offensive skill player – e.g., QB, RB or WR – claimed the historic award (Charles Woodson, 1997, when he was an upset pick over Peyton Manning).

Athlon has Matt Barkley, QB, USC (SR) as its No. 1 choice. If someone else has another player atop their Heisman ballot, they are simply being cute. He has the records, the stats, the Golden Boy image, the preseason No. 1 team in the nation and a plethora of talented skill players to work with. Here's Athlon's opinion of Mathieu: "The LSU DB is a really, really good player with a tenacious attitude. But his Heisman candidacy was built more on a popular YouTube videos, a creative nickname, two punt returns for TDs in blowout games and the support of the best CB (Morris Claiborne) in the nation. Mathieu can be a game-changer on special teams and find himself around the ball constantly, but can the 5-9, 175-pounder be the top cover man now that Claiborne and leader Brandon Taylor are gone from the secondary? That remains to be seen."...
