Vitter Has Right Priorities with Saints Watch Instead Of Obama Jobs TV

Jeff CrouereTonight, as President Barack Obama gives another speech to the nation, U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-LA) was expecting to be with his family and friends in Metairie, LA at a Saints party. The President is speaking right before the New Orleans Saints kickoff the NFL season against the Green Bay Packers.

Vitter said that “as a fanatic, (Saints fan), I have my priorities.” Only due to Senator Harry Reid's decision today to hold important votes after the President's speech has the Louisiana Senator announced that he will miss the Saints party and will be at the Capitol.  Some Washington insiders and Beltway blowhards have criticized the Senator and four other members of Congress for skipping the speech. For example, Norm Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute said any member of Congress that skips a presidential speech contributes to the “debasement of our politics and institutions.” He said that lawmakers that do not attend Obama’s address are giving “the finger to the President of the United States on a huge issue like jobs.”

Ornstein needs to get out of the Beltway more often. He needs to talk to average Americans who share Vitter’s distaste for how the President is misusing this address to a joint session of Congress. In the past, an address to a joint session of the U.S. Congress was reserved for a State of the Union speech or a national emergency, such as a declaration of war. Tonight, President Obama is using this nationally televised speech to tout his political agenda. This is part of his re-election campaign and the costs of this unnecessary event should be paid by his campaign, not the taxpayers of America.

The American people are tired of hearing the President who finds any excuse to commandeer the broadcast airwaves. They are also tired of his divisive rhetoric and his Socialist agenda, which does not work.

In fact, the American people have heard all of this before from President Obama. Remember the stimulus package? The $1 trillion boondoggle with “shovel ready jobs” was not effective in the least. Although Americans were promised more jobs and a lower unemployment rate, just the opposite occurred. The Obama administration claimed that the stimulus package would lower the unemployment rate to below 8 percent, but the country now faces a 9.1 percent unemployment rate. The package did not add jobs, it only added to the national debt.

In his speech, the President will promise Americans more jobs by spending hundreds of billions of dollars that we do not have in the treasury. Our country is broke and needs to cut spending, not add more to the ever increasing national debt.

The best way for President Obama to “create jobs” is to get out of the way. The federal government is ill-equipped to create the type of jobs our economy needs. The last thing the United States needs is more government bureaucrats. Instead, we should be stimulating the private sector, but such a philosophy is anathema to President Obama.

By not attending, Vitter is not insulting the President. He is spending time in his state with his constituents, a much better use of his time than being in Washington D.C. listening to the same drivel from Barack Obama. It would also help for the national news media and “analysts” like Norm Ornstein to spend some time with real Americans and not politicians. The long suffering people of this nation are tired of the talk and are ready for relief. The problem is that President Obama and other liberals don’t realize that the federal government does not solve problems; it just creates more of them.

No New Orleans Saints Party For Senator David Vitter
