Louisiana U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu voted in favor of cloture on President Obama's "jobs" bill, the American Jobs Act, however, the legislation failed to get sufficient votes to cut off debate in the Senate which would appear to kill the measure in its current form.  The cloture vote required at least 60 votes to pass the Democratically-controlled U.S. Senate but at the time of this publication appeared lacking ten votes.

In a statement following her vote, Landrieu said:

“Today, I voted to start debate on the American Jobs Act. This legislation would put Americans back to work. It would rebuild our infrastructure and refurbish our schools, while also extending tax cuts for middle-class families and businesses and critical assistance to those who continue to struggle to find work.

“The commonsense proposals in the American Jobs Act have received wide support in the past from both Democrats and Republicans. It is a fiscally responsible plan that creates jobs now by investing in our economy and reduces the deficit in the long term. This plan would fund our investments in the economy by asking people who make more than $1 million a year to contribute their fair share. This will help bring increased revenue into the federal treasury – where revenues currently are the lowest percentage of GDP since World War II.

“I firmly believe that the investments we make to create jobs in the private sector must be paid for in a way that does not jeopardize future economic recovery. That’s why I couldn’t back the President’s original plan to target a single industry that contributes billions of dollars to our economy each year and supports more than nine million American jobs. I was pleased that Senate leadership took a much-improved approach to paying for this legislation, and I would support it in its current form.”
