LSU Romp Over Arkansas: SEC, BCS Champions Next?

les-milesLSU fans might argue whether this LSU team, coached by Les Miles, is the best Baton Rouge squad ever.  Two more games will tell its fate.

Other than one very close overtime game in Tuscaloosa in October in which the Tigers snipped Alabama, virtually all of the games LSU have played to date have been either blowouts or dominant victories.

On Friday, it appeared the Razorbacks would be different than the other foes when Arkansas took a 14-0 lead and with LSU offense getting stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey.  But, before it was over, the Tigers prevailed by 24 points against another top-three opponent which makes one wonder if this Miles-purple and gold are destined to be the tops in LSU football history.

Only the SEC championship game and the BCS championship in the Sugar Bowl separate this team from what could be a fate to remember.

Here’s how some of the writers across the nation view LSU and the romp over Arkansas :

“ L.S.U. is simply different this season. The Tigers have shorn their reputation as a somewhat flaky, burlesque team led by a quirky coach whose daring sideline decisions always seemed to come with one second left on the clock.

This season, No. 1 L.S.U. has developed a solid personality. It is an impenetrable, robust bunch, like the Big Ten teams the Ohio-bred Les Miles grew up watching. The Tigers can slug it out with a punishing running attack and win trench battles while at the same time make did-you-see-that athletic plays. The fusion of power and playmakers has created a No. 1-ranked 12-0 team (8-0 Southeastern Conference) that has defeated seven top 25 teams, including three in the top 5.”

NY Times

“Tyrann Mathieu channeled his best Billy Cannon and No. 1 LSU was on its way to another run-away victory in the biggest game at Tiger Stadium in half a century.

Mathieu returned a punt 92 yards for a score and the Tigers punished third-ranked Arkansas with 286 yards rushing, wiping out a 14-point deficit with a 41-17 win Friday that secured a spot in the SEC championship.”

“Finally, someone made a statement. In a November filled with highly ranked teams doing their best to veer off the road to New Orleans -- where have you gone, Oklahoma State? What happened to you, Oregon? Stanford? -- No. 1 LSU ratified its standing as the team to beat.

You may quibble with how the Tigers did it -- spotting No. 3 Arkansas a 14-0 lead before roaring back to win, 41-17. But the record is the record is the record. LSU is 12-0 with victories over seven ranked teams, three of them in the top three at that time.

Besides, at some point we must accept that a Les Miles-coached team goes about its tasks differently from the way of, say, every other dominant team in the history of college football.

The rout of the Razorbacks clinches the SEC West title and a berth in the league championship for the Tigers against No. 13 Georgia. After last week, when three top-five teams fell, the BCS can relax. LSU is the Justin Verlander of the BCS rotation, cleaning up any mess that the rest of the staff may leave. “

LSU is the most talented team in the country right now and it showed it today. Arkansas is a very talented team and the Razorbacks were playing some of their best football as of late. The Razorbacks had a bit of life in them to start, but by the end of the game they looked completely outmatched.

How the LSU Tigers will fare in a likely repeat is unclear, but with it being in their neck of the woods this go around they may play better than they did in Tuscaloosa. With the assumed berth into the BCS title game the SEC will be in the title game for the sixth straight year.”
