red-headWomen throughout the New Orleans area gathered at the New Orleans Riverfront Hilton New Orleans Riverside February 3 to help defeat heart disease at the 2012 American Heart Association “Go Red For Women”, luncheon and fashion show.

The Go Red For Women Movement works to educate the fact that more women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, heart disease is often silent, hidden and misunderstood.

“Heart disease causes the death of one woman every minute,” said Dr. Corey Goldman, staff at Tulane Medical Center. “That’s why it’s so important to understand your personal risk factors and often-overlooked common symptoms, and to share that information with the women you love.”

The luncheon is part of the national Go Red For Women movement that encourages local women to take charge of their heart health by making it a top priority so they can live stronger, longer lives.

This year, co-chairs of the event are Anne Redd and Barbara Lacen-Keller.

"Many women do not realize that heart disease is the number #1 killer of women in our country. The Go Red For Women Luncheon provides a wonderful opportunity for us to come together as a community to educate women and their families about the importance of prevention,” says Anne Redd, 2012 New Orleans Go Red for Women Co-Chair.

This year’s featured speaker was Jamie Napolitano, a local heart disease and transplant survivor who is currently serving as one of only six national spokespersons for Go Red for Women. Closing out the luncheon program was a fashion show featuring clothing from Chatta Box. Local heart disease survivors and other prominent New Orleans women modeled the clothes. .

“The heart is the most talked about organ in the body—poets write about the heart, authors rhapsodize about the heart, and when we express compassion or condolences, we often say ‘my heart goes out to you’,” says Barbara Turner Windhorst, 2012 New Orleans Go Red For Women Co-Chair. “As women, it is our responsibility to make certain that we speak to one another’s hearts and determine that this year fewer women will die from cardiovascular disease.”
