What a week! I need to congratulate our local football quarterback Eli Manning of the New York Giants for his second NFL Super Bowl win against the New England Patriots. The whole city is proud of you, especially Mom and Dad Archie and Olivia Manning who were seen several times looking on proudly during the telecast in their stadium skybox.

On a sad note, I just learned that two dear friends of mine passed away this weekend. One of them was Byron Hughey, whom I have known since I was a member of the Board of Directors of the French Market Corporation and he was in charge of public relations. He and his partner Larry were some of the nicest people that I have ever met in New Orleans. I was just recently invited to his annual New Year Day celebration at his lovely condo on St. Charles. I always looked forward to it since he always had a nice gathering of old friends and delicious cuisine. May his soul rest in peace. I will miss him.

The other person who passed away was Nat Chesnut, father of my dear friend, attorney Stephen Chesnut, and husband of Lita, whom I knew from the New Orleans Opera Women’s Guild and her involvement with the diplomatic wives corps. Nat was the former PR Director for the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans (Dock Board), former president of the Foreign Relations Association of New Orleans and member of the board of directors of Le Petit Theatre. He was a real gentleman and he, too, will be missed.

Well, before I heard this double dose of sad news, I was enjoying another wonderful week in New Orleans. I started  it by attending a delicious celebration to honor the opening of Copeland on Veterans Blvd. I was impressed by the lite menu and the New Orleans Decor. That evening it is my every-other week Tuesday - Toasting with Margarita at le Booze of the Royal Sonesta Hotel. It featured my darling friend Adolfo Diaz, formerly the owner Chef of Azul Restaurant in the CBD. He is now the VP of the Lucky Player King Cake Vodka. He provided us with a taste of his delicious vodka. The following day it was released and tasted at the great King Cake Party at Patrick’s Bar Vin. It was fabulous and we got to taste about 20 different delicious King Cakes. His King Cake Vodka was sold out within few hours of release. Congratulations to Adolfo, and to my darling friend Andrea Mistretta who, I discovered about 27 year ago, was the artist who designed the lovely bottle.

That night was also the Annual Installation and Award Dinner of the French Quarter Business Association at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. That evening it was also the opening of the fabulous Blue Man Group show at the at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. On Wednesday, I attended the lovely opening of the newly decorated Cocktail Bar at the Windsor Court. You need to check it out since it features live entertainment and that is where every Saturday, talented clarinet player Tim Laughlin hold court every Saturday from 9 p.m. to midnight.

On Thursday, I attended the always fun but irreverent Politics with Punch at the Eiffel Society on St. Charles Avenue. On Friday, I attended the Go Red  for Women Luncheon at the Hilton. It featured a deligtful fun-loving fashion show.  Check out the video and the photos.

I loved the elegant Masked Ball of the Alliance Francaise at the Royal Orleans Hotel. Check out all the lovely photos.

On Saturday, I started my evening by attending a lovely soiree to watch the Krewe de Vieux Parade that, as always, was fun and very irreverent. I needed to rush to attend my friend Mary West's Matchmaking Valentine's VIP Launch Party at the Monteleone Hotel . It was well attended and very lovely but I also needed to rush to attend theThe Coronation of King Cake Queen XIX of Gay Mardi Gras Nicole DuBois of the Krewe of Queenateenas at the lovely Ambush Mansion. The Theme was Carnivale in Rio and the food was delicious.

I ended my week by attending a delicious and informative lecture; Cocteles y Cantineros: a Look at the Rich History of Cuban Drinks presented byy: David Wondrich  at the Museum of the American Cocktail

As I mentioned to you last week, this upcoming week is my most important week in the Carnival Season and in the month of February. I will be starting my week by hosting my monthly Round Table Luncheon at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Wednesday, February 8 and, as in the past, it will be a Mardi Gras Celebration. The guests speakers are  Bambi Deville Engeran, author of WWII Bakelite Jewelry, Dianne de Las Casas, author of the new children’s book Dinosaur Mardi Gras; and Jennifer Renee, designer of the 2012 Zulu Mardi Gras poster. . The entertainment will be provided by Becky Allen and Al "Carnival" Johnson acompanied on the piano by Jim Walpole.–

On Thursday, I will be attending the Gambit Classical Arts Awards presentation on February 9. My darling friend Sammy Steele will receive the very deserving award as Humanitarian of the Arts. I do hope, however, that prayers are offered for Gloria Powers, one of the founders of the Big Easy Awards and, for many years, the award ceremonies’ main coordinator. She suffered a stroke recently and is with one of her daughters in Lafayette.

On Friday, I will be parading as the former Queen of the Krewe of Cork (see below for details) and then on Sunday, thanks to the Windsor Court, my darling Chiquita Linda once again will be strolling royally thru the French Quarter as a Duchess in the Mystic Krewe of Barkus. Not to be missed.

Have a great week.

2012 Krewe of Cork Parade

The Mardi Gras season parade day celebration is always two Fridays before Mardi Gras itself and is filled with the three things the Krewe loves most- Wine, Food, and Fun! The event culminates with a King and Queen’s party that evening. Grand Marshal Krewe of Cork 2012 is Jean-noel Formeaux Du Sartel and the Queen 2012 is Allyson Cabes.
