brees-packAre we finally seeing an open hole in the New Orleans Saints tough defense in the Drew Brees contract game which needs to be done by next Monday or else the quarterback must accept the paltry sum offered as the franchise player or not play in 2012?

According to the Times Picayune, Mike Triplett, a deal just might be on the way.

“At long last, by 3 p.m. next Monday, Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints will finally have agreed to a new five-year contract. It will be the biggest upset of the NFL season if they don't.

The two sides will probably keep haggling over the details right up until the July 16 deadline. But it will be stunning if Brees doesn't ultimately sign a contract worth somewhere between $19.2 million and $20 million per year, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Only an absurd amount of stubbornness could get in the way now.

A possible Saints-Brees deal has already been received as great news, should it materialize:

According to the Alex Kay of the Bleacher Report:

“Considering just how long these contract negotiations have dragged on for, Saints fans everywhere will let out a collective sigh of relief when Brees’ signature goes on the documents.

Regardless of whether Brees ends up making around $96 million or $100 million over the life of the deal, he is going to get fair market value for his services.”

For many Saints fans, who have suffered the indignities and the scorn resulting from the bounty scandal, any news about Drew Brees getting closer to being in the fold would be the type of play that normally causes the Superdome foundation to shake.

Speaking of, New Orleans will be the host of the next Super Bowl at the dome.  The prospects of having Drew Brees lead the charge next year in that championship game wouldn’t just shake the floor in that building, it would tear off the roof.

Well, for now, let’s just get him signed and we can talk later about the raising the ceiling.
