Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen’s love affair with dictators

jeffcrouereIt is an ever growing problem in the world of sports and entertainment. Celebrities who are gifted as an athlete or actor somehow believe they are also gifted with great insight on political or cultural issues. Quite often, after speaking to a reporter, a celebrity looks foolish and has to apologize. It happened again this week in Miami. Marlins Manager Ozzie Guillen has been suspended for five days by the team for telling Time Magazine “I love” Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro.

Guillen must have lost his mind to make such a comment about a brutal communist, who has killed innocent civilians and repressed freedoms in his country for over fifty years.

Guillen is managing a team based in a community filled with refugees of the Castro regime. These are brave people who fled the Castro oppression and escaped to America. Unfortunately, many others not so lucky and were killed or imprisoned.

In Miami, there is understandable anger at Guillen for his insensitive and foolish remarks. Many Cuban American leaders want the team to fire Guillen, who has a penchant for praising Latin American dictators. Several years ago, Guillen expressed his strong support for Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez.

It is interesting to note that while Guillen earns his huge salary in the United States, his dictator friends are attempting to bring about the destruction of this country. Chavez and Castro are also strong supporters of terrorist countries like Iran and working to repress freedom loving people worldwide.

Guillen has now apologized for his remarks, saying that he “betrayed a Latin community.” However, he also betrayed his team, his fans and people of the United States of America.

In the Time Magazine interview, Guillen also said “I respect Fidel Castro,” noting that “A lot of people wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that son of a bitch is still there.”  Of course Castro is still there. He enjoys all of the trappings of power, while his country has to deal with poverty and third world conditions. On the streets of Havana, American automobiles from the 1950’s are a common sight. Castro’s long reign of power is nothing to admire. It has meant that millions of Cuban Americans cannot go back home.

At least Guillen admits that he was “very stupid” for making such comments about Castro, but it is nothing new for this socialist loving manager. He also claims that he “respects” Hugo Chavez, yet the Venezuelan tyrant remains in power by rigging elections and suppressing his people.

The team released a statement that recognized “the seriousness of the comments attributed to Guillen. The pain and suffering caused by Fidel Castro cannot be minimized, especially in a community filled with victims of the dictatorship." Congratulations to the Marlins for taking a stand against Castro and disciplining their rogue manager.

Their decision will not stop other Miami leaders, such as Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Joe Martinez, from continuing to call for his removal as manager. It will also not stop many others from questioning their initial decision to hire a manager who either is a supporter of communism or is someone too ignorant to understand the dangers of that brutal system.
