digital media louisianaThere was a time when digital media and Louisiana was an oxymoron.

There was a time when digital and Louisiana was a joke.

As the originator and founder of the Louisiana Digital Media Law, I take great pride in reading that Business Facilities magazine has named Louisiana the top state for digital media in its 2012 Rankings Report.  Kudos to the state, to the prior administrations, the current Jindal administration, LED Secretary Stephen Moret, Entertainment Directors Sherri McConnell and Chris Stelly, Baton Rouge chamber, GNO Inc, Michael Hecht, Idea Village, we have met a goal worth working towards.

We are closer to the dream of being the "Digital Media Capital of the World", a landmark that many of us have envisioned and now see as a possible reality.

Secretary Moret, a couple of years ago said he was hoping that Louisiana would be the Digital Media Capital of the World" within the next ten years.

Today's announcement is not a bad start.

Here is a press release from Louisiana Economic Development and GNO Inc.

(NEW ORLEANS, LA -- July 25, 2012) Today, Business Facilities magazine announced its selection of Louisiana as the top state for digital media in its 2012 State Rankings Report. The report also ranks Louisiana at the top for both "Economic Growth Potential" and for its workforce training program, LED FastStart, and fifth for "Best Business Climate".

“Louisiana being named the leader in the digital media industry is not only a great honor but a sign that our commitment to make Louisiana a great place to do business is yielding positive results,” said Michael Hecht, President & CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. “The decisions by GE Capital and Gameloft to locate here are signals to the industry and entrepreneurs alike that Greater New Orleans is the prime location for digital media businesses.”

According to Business Facilities, “Louisiana’s digital media industry is one of the fastest growing in the nation, growing at a rate of more than 100 percent. The state has almost 19,000 skilled software developers and more than 100,000 professionals with a skill set conducive to digital media or software development. In addition, its information sector, including software publishing and telecommunications, has experienced the second fastest growth rate in the country since June 2009.”

The digital media ranking was based upon an evaluation of available incentives, recent project activity, cluster growth potential, and initiatives/job creation in digital animation, video games, graphics, and film sectors.

“New Orleans is undergoing an economic renaissance – and digital media is playing an integral role,” said Business Facilities Editor in Chief Jack Rogers.

Other Louisiana rankings in this report include second for “Job Growth Leaders,” and tenth for both “Lowest Cost of Labor” and “Biotech Strength - Emerging Biotech Hubs,” making a total of seven top 10 rankings for the state.
