Governor Bobby Jindal yesterday evening spoke with Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus on Northrop Grumman’s plans to leave the Avondale Shipyard in 2013.

Governor Jindal said, “We had a good conversation and I appreciate his commitment to making sure Avondale continues to be a busy manufacturing site.

“One of the ideas we discussed early on was whether we could produce double hull tankers at the shipyard and I’m glad to see this may work. Sec. Mabus indicated that he intends to move up the Navy’s program for building double-hulled oil tankers to roughly 2014 from 2017, so that Avondale would have the potential to see more work.

“This is one of many conversations we’ll have on the topic and we will keep talking and working with Sec.. Mabus to maximize this incredible ship yard and protect Louisiana jobs.”

Avondale recently had a total employment of roughly 5,000 direct jobs, which supported about 6,500 additional indirect jobs in the New Orleans region, meaning a total of roughly 11,500 jobs are at risk due to recent changes in the Navy’s procurement program.
