Cao has voted for many of the President’s major bills including the healthcare and financial reform legislation. As a result, the Congressman has incurred the wrath of many of his top Republican donors for being so supportive of the Obama agenda.
Now, Cao says he will reach out to his friend the President and “warn” him that Richmond has an array of ethical troubles. Cao believe that Obama must be unaware of Richmond’s record. Of course Obama is not too concerned about Richmond’s ethical issues, since all he cares about is that Richmond is a Democrat and will vote for Nancy Pelosi for House Speaker. Obama wants his party to retain majority status in Congress so that his agenda will not be stalled. If Republicans take over one or both Houses of Congress, Obama can forget about his agenda for there will be total gridlock on Capitol Hill.
In the Richmond commercial, Obama calls the Democratic State Representative a “champion” for New Orleans. Let’s take a look at this “champion.” According to Cao, “Cedric Richmond had his law license suspended for lying to the voters;” and “has been the subject of two ethics violations as a legislator.” Because he falsely claimed residence in a New Orleans city council district, the Louisiana State Supreme Court removed Richmond from the ballot in April 2005. Just two years later, Richmond was arrested for fighting at a bar in Baton Rouge. Evidently, Richmond was upset that he was denied the use of a valuable resource, the bar’s pool table.
Johnson believes that Richmond is “radioactive” and is going to bring shame to the district just like “Dollar Bill” Jefferson, the convicted ex-Congressman. Yet, House Democrats never took action against Jefferson during his trial and while he was indicted. Richmond has only been the subject of investigations and has not been indicted on any charges, so Cao should not expect the Democratic Party to be the least bit concerned about his opponent’s ethical record.
For example, ethical scoundrels like U.S. Representatives Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters are still in Congress and have not been reprimanded by the Democratic Party. While Speaker Pelosi predicted that this would be the most “ethical” Congress of all-time, she has not lifted a finger to protest unethical behavior.
President Obama and the Democrats are well aware of Richmond’s history. Instead of being worried, they have embraced his candidacy. He has been endorsed by the major players in the Democratic Party like Senator Mary Landrieu and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
At this point, Cao should not expect any help from Obama or the Democrats. He will need to go on the offensive against Richmond if he expects to have any chance of victory.
There is certainly plenty of material in Richmond’s background to expose and the voters should know his complete history.
The real question is whether the former Jesuit seminarian has the appetite for the type of negative campaign that will be necessary for victory.
Inquiring minds throughout the district want to know and will soon find out.
