Kmart, Wal-Mart, Macy's, retailers: Grinches who stole Thanksgiving

grinchOver the past few years, many commentators have noted that Christmas is under attack in this country. In public squares, the word has been banned as supposedly offensive to non-Christians. Thus, the name of events such as the tree lighting in New Orleans City Park has changed from Christmas in the Oaks to Celebration in the Oaks.

After scoring victories in the war on Christmas, the forces of secularism have a new target, the Thanksgiving holiday. This has been a day when American families gather to give thanks to God for our many blessings. It has been a time for turkey, trimmings and football, an American tradition.

Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to tradition as our country is changing and not for the better.

This year, more retailers will be open for Thanksgiving Day. In fact, some like Kmart, will be open all day, starting at 6 a.m. Kmart will be open for 41 straight hours of crass consumerism.
Other retailers like Wal-Mart are opening in the evening and Macy’s will be opening at 5 p.m., three hours earlier than last year.

The result of this decision is that thousands of low wage employees will be working, unable to spend Thanksgiving with their families. With jobs scarce and the economy in poor condition, these employees cannot afford to skip work on Thanksgiving, for they may place their job in jeopardy.

Thanksgiving is a day for prayer, good food and family, not a day for shopping. There is plenty of time for Christmas shopping and buying unwanted presents for people who don’t need anything without infringing on Thanksgiving.

In the all consuming quest to provide more shopping days, retailers are now on the verge of sacrificing this cherished holiday. By forcing their employees to work on Thanksgiving, retailers are placing profits over the needs of their employees; placing consumerism over faith.

It is sad commentary on the state of our nation that Kmart and other retailers will be filled to capacity on Thanksgiving as millions of Americans will gladly forgo family traditions to shop.

Ideally, Americans should boycott these retailers and send them a message to stop interfering in this day of thankful prayer. Americans should reject this retail ploy and put their priorities in the right place.

Our country, despite a multitude of problems, has been magnificently blessed by God. On Thanksgiving and every day, we need to set aside our selfish pursuits long enough to express gratitude to the Almighty for the wonderful gifts He has bestowed on this nation. His protection has allowed our country to grow and prosper for the last 237 years.

For the Americans who are mindlessly shopping on this holiday, let’s hope they don’t forget about the real reason for Thanksgiving.
