kangaroo-courtPrejudged or not prejudged, that is the question?

On Friday, the NFL Players Association filed documents in court as requested by federal Judge  Ginger Berrigan in the ongoing bountygate legal dispute.

On Thursday, Roger Goodell , in a written declaration filed with the court said in a phone conversation, he and NFLPA union chief DeMaurice Smith agreed Smith "to address discipline of the club and non-player employees and then to afford the NFLPAa reasonable opportunity to conduct its own investigation and express its views before I imposed discipline on the players."

Such an action would suggest that Goodell was acting reasonably and still deliberating and that out of courtesy to the union, he waited until May to punish the Saints players rather than doing so in March.

According to the AP, "Documents filed yesterday include sworn declarations by sanctioned linebacker Scott Fujita, now with the Cleveland Browns, who reiterated comments he made in June in which he described a phone conversation with Goodell in March.

“Mr. Goodell told me that he would be coming down hard with punishments on Saints coaches, but that with respect to Saints players, he was not quite sure what he had on them, and that player punishments would therefore take some time,” Fujita’s declaration said.

The union also noted in its filing that as late as April 24, Goodell was quoted in media reports as saying he and league investigators “have been continuing our work” investigating player conduct, and “I hope to reach those decisions very soon.”
