staton1John Carney's margin for error during his latest stint with the Saints was one missed 29-yard field goal attempt.

Also on Tuesday the Saints wanted to give another veteran running back a try and signed free agent Julius Jones. This move indicates that Pierre Thomas isn't a lock to return to the lineup this week, and that coach Sean Payton isn't thrilled with his tandem of Ladell Betts and rookie Chris Ivory.

Both Betts and Ivory put up decent stats, but Betts had a fumble and a dropped pass against the Cardinals that resulted in an interception. Ivory has struggled with fumbles and pass protection.

The Saints also picked up safety Matt Giordano to help on specials teams where they need help. They released running back Deshawn Wynn to make room for Jones, a former Cowboy.

The move to dump Carney, 46, looks harsh, but the Saints (3-2) couldn’t afford to keep two kickers on the roster when they are so banged up at other positions They had to make a choice and Garret Hartley got the nod. He can miss a 29-yard field goal attempt, too.
