What should Louisiana do with Southern University System and the University of New Orleans given the massive budget cuts?  Should the University of New Orleans be a part of the Southern system?

Here is a from Southern University statement from SUNO regarding a comment by Dr. Ron Mason:

In lieu of media inquiries regarding Dr. Ron Mason’s comments regarding the Southern University System and the University of New Orleans on Wednesday at a Baton Rouge Rotary Club luncheon, Southern University at New Orleans has issued the following statement to Dr. Victor Ukpolo, Chancellor of SUNO:

President Mason informed me that his comments which appear in the newspaper article were made during a Q&A session at a Rotary luncheon.  The question was “What are you going to do about SUNO”?   He responded,  “New Orleans needs a strong HBCU.  A better idea for Southern, New Orleans and Louisiana would be to make UNO a part of the Southern System.”

Here is a what the Advocate reported Thursday concerning Masson's comments:

Mason said LSU owns Baton Rouge, the University of Louisiana System has Lafayette and that Southern is overshadowed. SUNO and UNO have somewhat overlapping missions, he said, and higher education in New Orleans should be restructured.

“Take race out of the issue,” he said.

“Maybe what would make sense is for UNO to become part of the Southern system,” Mason said. “That way you’d have three systems with three markets that each of them would be responsible for and, to me, that’s a great way to organize higher education in Louisiana.”
