Allowing people to simply enter this country by crossing our border is a disservice to the American people and to our nation. It is also illegal. America is a nation of immigrants, and we should welcome new immigrants to share in the greatness of America. But to allow anyone to enter the United States without regard to any rules or the enforcement of our current immigration laws is outrageous.
The politicians say we need immigration reform yet neither democrats nor republicans can agree on what constitutes reform. In political theater President Obama (D) in an effort to look like he is doing something has met with Gov. Rick Perry (R) of Texas and other leaders while attending a series of political fundraisers. Republicans on Capitol Hill continue to flounder over fantasy solutions to the huge problem of illegal immigration. The President blames Congress, and Congress blames the President. While both sides stonewall the other, illegal immigration prospers.
The reality is very simple. Millions of people including countless numbers of children have entered the United States illegally and continue to do so. Good people as well as bad people have streamed across our border. Included in that number are most likely terrorists who want to do harm to our country. Have we already forgotten 9/11? Terrorism is on the rise in the Middle East. Al Qaeda is as strong as ever, and now a new terror group, ISIS, has emerged becoming a threat to the entire region, Europe, and the United States.
America must be diligent and on guard. By keeping our borders porous through lax enforcement, our government is not doing its job. The borders must be shut down. The U.S. has gone into other nations and successfully beaten back well armed enemies. To say we cannot shut down and secure our own border is silly. By placing local police who know the area, immigration officers, the National Guard, and the military where needed along the Mexican border, we can stop illegal immigration into this country. Combine this with tough penalties for those who hire illegal immigrants and no free handouts to anyone who crosses illegally. With aggressive prevention, no jobs to be had, and no free handouts, there is no reason to cross the border. Once the message gets out and is backed up with action, the illegal flow will turn to a trickle.
The tough job will be dealing with the millions of illegal immigrants who are now here. This is the hard part. Putting these millions of people on buses to return them to their countries of origin as the far right would like is impossible. And to those on the left who want to open the door to free and open immigration into our country, as the United Nations, forget it. That won’t work either, and the American people won’t stand for it. Thanks to the federal government for not doing its job, a path to legal status for illegal immigrants without a criminal record or terrorist ties is the only reasonable alternative for many of those already here.
Until the politicians in Washington become more interested in America than in their own selfish, political agendas, nothing will get done; and, like everything else in America that is not getting done, that is sad. The American people and our nation deserve much better.
It is time. Illegal immigration has to stop, Mr. President and members of Congress. Step up, guys, and get it done.
