David West scored 25 points and Chris Paul added 14 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds as the Hornets remained undefeated with a 87-81 victory over the Bucks on Saturday night at Milwaukee,

The Hornets improved to 8-0 while the Bucks fell to 2-5.

"I'm in my sixth year in the league and I've seen every defender you could possibly play," said Paul. "We thought coming into the game Mbah a Mote would guard me the whole game."

Paul was covered by the 6-foot-8 Mote and down the stretch Paul got two big baskets and two assists in the final four minutes.

"Defense is our calling card." said Hornets coach Monty Williams. "We don't want that to be a catch phrase. We want to be able to practice it and preach it everyday.

"Our guys understand how important it is to our program. yet having Chris Paul and D-West playing offense the way they have been, and Emeka (Okafor) playing the way he did against Miami, certainly helps your defense."

The Hornets return to action against the Clippers on Tuesday night in the Arena, and host the Blazers on Saturday before going to Dallas on Nov. 15.

AFTER JUST about two weeks of play, there are three undefeated teams left in the NBA. The Atlanta Hawks sit atop the Eastern Conference and the Lakers are back at their familiar home   While both of those records are impressive, when you look at the quality of competition they have faced, it'd be hard to say they shouldn't be undefeated at this point. But the other undefeated team, well, they haven't been so lucky to have a cupcake schedule early on in the season. No, the Hornets have only played one team that did not make the playoffs last season. The Houston Rockets didn't make the postseason last year, but they are a division opponent and the game was in Houston, so even that matchup wasn't a given. The other teams they faced, the Milwaukee Bucks (twice), Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs (division rival) and the Miami Heat, all made the postseason last year and the Heat are one of the four teams considered to be in serious title contention...The Portland Trail Blazers have signed big man Sean Marks. Marks appeared in 14 gamers for the Hornets last season...

Forty years ago, Tom Dempsey's NFL record 63-yard field goal beat the Lions 19-17 at Tulane Stadium. It ranks among the greatest moments in Saints history. Dempsey, who was born with half a foot and with one finger on his right hand, went out on the field with two seconds remaining and the Saints had the ball at their 45-yard line.  "On that particular day, the offensive coordinator called down. He said 'Tell Stumpy to get ready.' I knew I was getting ready to try a long field goal. When we ran out, if I'd had known it was 63 yards, I might have messed it up. I probably would have tried to kick it too hard. Lou Groza had told me, “Always kick past the goalposts. Keep you head down, Stupid, and follow through.' I'm watching the spot. And when Joe Scarpati picked up his hand to catch the ball, that's when I started forward. I did take a little bit of a stutter step. I don't know why. I like the ball straight up and down, not tilted. I followed through great on that one. When I watch the film on it, I kept my head down and really followed through. I knew I hit it good, but you wonder if it'll stay straight. It's a long way for a football to stay straight." Dempsey played for several more teams after leaving the Saints the following season, but returned to New Orleans where he resides today...

When LSU wears purple jerseys, they have the best-looking uniforms in college football...The LSU victory over Alabama gave me insight to pick a Tigers upset over Alabama.  LSU is 14-1 after a loss under Les Miles. The Tigers are 5-0 at home  after a road loss under Miles. Where did LSU lose that Auburn game? in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Where did LSU play Alabama? in Death Valley. Miles is now 2-3 against Nick Saban Saban on LSU: "They've really had probably as good a run as anybody in the last 8 to 10 years, and Les Miles has done a fantastic job there."...Three signs of old age. The first is the loss of memory. I've forgotten the other two...

THE READERS have spoken. USA Today polled its readers to choose their favorite NFL announcers and Phil Simms of CBS edged Chris Collingsworth of NBC as the best game analyst. Al Michaels of NBC won for best play-by-play announcer.  Fox NFL Sunday was named best pregame show. ESPN won in four categories for best pregame show host (Chris Berman), best insider (Adam Schefter), best sideline reporter (Suszy Kolber) and best studio show (NFL Matchup)...
