According to WAFB, "drilling of the observation well at the giant sinkhole in Assumption Parish is expected to enter the abandoned salt cavern Thursday afternoon.

The Office of Conservation says Texas Brine, the company which owns the salt dome, reported the progress Wednesday.

Officials hope the well can help give clues as to what is causing that sinkhole in the Bayou Corne Area."
