The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board is hosting a weekend of events for the 12th annual Great American Seafood Cook-Off.

Twleve chefs from throughout the U.S. will showcase seafood from their home states as they compete to be America’s Best Seafood Chef, and wear the crown of King of American Seafood. The competition will be streamed live at

To wrap up the weekend’s events, organizers will join 4-H for the fourth consecutive year to host a youth cook-off. Teams from five states will prepare seafood dishes with no more than 750 calories.

On Wednesday, August 5th, Centenary sent 165 students, faculty, and staff members to Paris for our 2nd annualCentenary in Paris. Centenary remains the only college that sends all incoming freshmen to study abroad while earning college credits before beginning their fall semester.


The 3rd Annual Farm to Table International Conference is scheduled forAugust 8-10, 2015, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. F2Ti features the brightest thought leaders and leading practitioners in the burgeoning farm-to-table movement. F2Ti explores the cultivation, distribution, and consumption of food and drink sourced locally to globally. It takes place in tandem with the Louisiana Restaurant Association’s Annual Foodservice & Hospitality EXPO, an event attracting food and beverage professionals from across the country.

This year’s theme, “A Feast for the Senses,” spotlights the sensual aspects of food and drink at every stage of the agricultural-culinary cycle. Topics will include, but are not limited to, best practices in urban farming, bringing products to market, sourcing locally, enhancing sustainability, and the latest trends and developments in the industry, including food science, security, and safety.

Dr. Temple Grandin, autism activist and animal expert, will give a keynote address on Sunday, August 9, at 3:30 p.m.

The Latest Unemployment Insurance claims files from the Louisiana Workforce Commission. Initial UI claims for the week ending Aug.  1, 2015, decreased to 2,479 from the previous week’s total of 2,510. Construction had the largest decrease in initial claims, followed by health care and social assistance. Initial claims for mining, which includes oil and gas exploration and extraction workers, increased from 73 to 74. Others working in the oil and gas support services are spread among various sectors.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Aug. 1, 2015, decreased to 27,591 from the previous week’s total of 27,869.
