Stevens was in Benghazi, Libya, a lawless area in a country that has not transitioned from dictatorship to democracy. He had no American security forces with him and relied on Libyan guards who eventually betrayed him on that fateful night. Two former Navy Seals who were involved in another mission gave their lives trying to protect the Ambassador against an attack by over 400 Islamic radicals.
There are many questions that need to be answered:
- Why was Stevens in Benghazi?
- Why was there no additional security for the Ambassador?
- Why did we ignore warnings from Libyan officials about a possible attack on the 9/11 anniversary?
At a minimum, Libyan warnings should have been heeded and more security provided for the Ambassador. Yet, no common sense security measures were taken. As of now, Americans are receiving only spin from the Obama administration and no real answers.
The murder of a U.S. Ambassador is not only tragic, but it is also very unusual. It was the first time in 33 years an American diplomat had been killed while serving this nation. This is a major incident that should lead to congressional investigations and a full review of what happened.
Since this incident occurred, the Obama administration has been unable to keep their story straight. Initially, the administration said the attack was a violent reaction to an amateurish anti-Muslim movie. Eventually, this cover story fell apart causing Jay Carney, the President’s Press Secretary, to finally admit that it was “self evident” the Ambassador’s murder was a terror attack.
Carney’s comments just confirm the obvious that the Ambassador was killed in a coordinated attack that involved complex planning over the span of many days. While his Press Secretary is finally admitting the truth, the President is still fixated on the anti-Muslim movie. In an interview on Univision, the President once again used the movie as an excuse for the Libyan attack. The Obama administration is also spending over $70,000 to run advertisements in Pakistan apologizing for the anti-Muslim movie.
It is time the President stopped apologizing for a movie the United States government did not produce or condone and stop using it as a catch-all excuse for all Muslim protests and violence occurring in over two dozen countries.
Clearly, the President’s policy toward the Muslim world has been an abject failure. His attempt to appease our enemies and move away from our historic partnership from Israel has not led to better relations with the Islamic world.
Iran is still moving toward nuclear weapons and other Muslim countries that receive billions of dollars in U.S. aid are engulfed in anti-American protests. Every day, Americans are seeing images of our flag being burned and protesters shouting “death to America.” This is becoming all too familiar.
We need to stop funding our enemies, stop apologizing for our freedoms and stop worrying about how we are viewed in the Muslim world and whether radical Islamists like us, for this is a fool’s errand. Because of our freedoms and rights outlined in the U.S. Constitution, this country will never be liked by radical Islamists.
It is much more important to make sure our enemies respect the United States of America. This is accomplished by a firm policy of “peace through strength.”
Our focus needs to be solely on our national security and bringing to justice those who attack Americans. We need to make sure the message is delivered that we will forcefully respond whenever one of our citizens is killed.
Those killers who ambushed Ambassador Stevens need to be given a one way ticket to meet their 72 virgins in Islamic paradise.
It is time we realized that the millions of followers of radical Islam are at war with American and the West. The sooner we grasp this fact the better our chances of protecting the lives of innocent Americans.
