No minimum wage hike
The Louisiana Senate Finance Committee, by a 7-3 vote, voted down Sen. Troy Carter’s bill, which would have raised the minimum wage to $8 in 2018 and to $8.50 in 2019.
The bill would have also required the state minimum wage to be raised to match any increase to the federal minimum wage should it be raised above the state minimum.

New Louisiana poll
A new Louisiana poll conducted by Southern Media and Opinion Research (SMOR) between May 3 and May 6 reveals that Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards has a 53.8% job approval rating.
State Treasurer’s race by Lou Gehrig Burnett, Publisher of Fax-Net
The race to replace John Kennedy as state Treasurer will be the only statewide race on the ballot on October 14. Kennedy is now the junior U.S. senator from Louisiana.
The state treasurer’s job is not one of the glamor positions in state government. Therefore, it will be hard for candidates to get voters to pay attention to the race.

Crews cruises to victory
The closeness of the race fizzled, and Raymond Crews ran away with the special election for the House District 8 seat in the Louisiana Legislature on Saturday.
He defeated opponent Robbie Gatti by a 64 to 36% margin. Voter turnout was only 20.7%. Crews had 3,845 votes to 2,150 for Gatti.
