TJBE 5mILLIONoday, Gov. John Bel Edwards filed his annual campaign finance report showing that his campaign had $5,013,461.97 cash on hand at the halfway point of his term as governor. 
 
In 2017, Gov. Edwards raised $2,145,518.56 in contributions, with 85 percent of the contributions coming from the citizens of Louisiana.  Gov. Edwards also limited his fundraising, according to state law, to months when the Louisiana Legislature was not in session.

trump 2017It would be an understatement to say that this past year has been controversial on the political scene.  Three major stories dominated the news from my perspective.  Obviously at the top of the list was the continuing saga of Donald Trump.  Then there was the Alabama Senate race that became the nation’s number one soap opera.  And we learned that the government spends millions of dollars running down rumors of UFOs.

We're roughly two years away from either re-electing John Bel Edwards for Louisiana Governor or selecting his successor. Louisiana, being that dark blood-rich red state comprising a majority of Democrats under Republican dominance, will have a choice.  Does it follow the rest of the Deep South and elect only Republicans for major statewide office or, does it buck the trend once again, and back the Democrat incumbent?

kennedy senAnother battle is brewing on Capitol Hill, but this time it is not about taxes or healthcare, but the critical issue of consumer protection. In July, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) enacted a new rule eliminating mandatory arbitration clauses in certain financial contracts. Henceforth, companies can offer arbitration in contracts, but must notify consumers that class action lawsuits are allowed.
