Louisiana News & politics focus on Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards and Louisiana legislature

In what could be one of the most cautiously optimistic statement made so far since the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig and subsequent massive leaking of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, the National Incident Commander Admiral Thad Allen issued this statement concerning the well integrity test.
"The federal science team has been closely overseeing BP's well integrity test with the goal of first doing no harm to the well. Based on the data and pressure readings compiled to date, the test has provided us with valuable information which will inform the procedure to kill the well and a better understanding of options for temporary shut in during a hurricane.

Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced plans to deliver a full-service hospital in New Orleans East. After renegotiating a flawed real-estate deal with Universal Health Services (UHS), Landrieu announced that the City will purchase the Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital site for $16.25 million – representing a $23.75 million dollar savings for the real estate deal alone. Landrieu laid out a plan to renovate and open the hospital for a projected cost of $110 million – resulting in projected total savings of $53 million for the taxpayers.
It is
tough to tell which of the two major Louisiana US Senate candidates is in a free-fall or seeing “bleak” news for his respective campaign.
Now that qualifying for office is a done deal after last Friday, the two candidates who have the best chance of being our next US Senator are claiming to have that “Big Mo”.
Today, Governor Bobby Jindal traveled to the Bridge Side Marina in Grand Isle where he joined dozens of fishermen and members of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) to highlight the reopening of recreational fishing areas. On Wednesday, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) announced significant openings to recreational fishing that were previously closed due to the oil spill. With this action, approximately 86 percent of recreational fishing in Louisiana was opened immediately.
Something has to give. The federal government has run up obscene budget deficits, yet Congress and the Obama administration continue to push for more spending. State and local governments are financially strapped and must prepare for the loss of the federal stimulus money that the federal government has sent them to help balance their budgets for the last two years. Governments at the federal, state, and local levels have been resisting the need to make deep spending cuts. Instead, many have passed higher taxes on their constituents and all have waited for the illusive economic recovery that never quite seems to arrive.
NEW ORLEANS – Thursday was a good day for Louisiana for various reasons. For one, after almost three months, it was the day that the BP oil well that been pouring oil into the Gulf of Mexico was finally stopped.
So far, as of noon Friday afternoon a performance of the testing of the well is working but there is still some time to go before BP could consider whether the new effort to stop the oil spill might be successful.
Then, there was the successes in containing the oil from hitting the Louisiana marsh and waters.
Good morning and what’s up with America dipping across the pond for the replacement to Larry King? CNN has tabbed America’s Got Talent judge, Piers Morgan to fill those shoes.
Author and radio talk show host, Laura Ingraham joins the show to discuss her new book “The Obama Diaries” which has garnered silence from the Obama camp and examples of how the White House shelter the masters of blurring the lines between fact and fiction.
The BP oil gush has for now stopped flowing in the Gulf of Mexico. For the first time in almost 90 days, the ruptured well is capped.

During the last several days, numerous speakers appeared before the President’s oil spill commission to plead for the resumption of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Even the commission, which did not contain one representative from the oil and gas industry, was inclined to support the lifting of the moratorium.
This commission was formed by President Obama to study the oil spill disaster and to make sure that another one does not happen in the future. Yet, there have already been hearings in both Washington D.C. and New Orleans. Much is known about why the disaster occurred and the mistakes that were made by both British Petroleum and the federal agency charged with oversight of the drilling operations. To prevent future mishaps, more vigorous oversight is needed, but drilling in the Gulf does not need to be stopped.
Our political system is broken. I confess to frequent dismay at how political actors of all stripes vote on issues, but a vote in Congress week before last ranks right up there with the worst votes of their tenure.
Once again the culprit is Senator Ben Nelson, purported Democrat of Nebraska. He joined with Republicans to vote against extending unemployment benefits to the long-term unemployed.

Was it a mere a coincidence that on the same afternoon a federal judge in New Orleans struck down the six-month drilling moratorium in the Gulf, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service shut down the state's sand berm construction project off the Chandeleur Islands?
Or that before that moratorium was enjoined, the chairman of the presidential commission on the Gulf disaster was open to making interim recommendations that could allow drilling to resume within six months, but then he dismissed that possibility after the ruling?
"We can stop the hospital," activist Eileen Comiskey declared to The
Louisiana Weekly. "People don't believe it, but there is still time
to stop the VA hospital from destroying this neighborhood. It's not
too late."
In a State of the City Address entitled Eyes Wide Open, Mayor Mitch
Landrieu told a packed audience at Xavier University on Thursday, July
8, 2010, “During the transition, we were told that the city had a $35
million deficit. If that was not bad enough, when my team got into
City Hall, we opened the books and after a thorough audit found that
the budget deficit was $62 million."
BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal released the following statement on Northrop Grumman’s decision to shut down their operations at Avondale:
“This is obviously very disappointing news for our people and our entire state. Northrop Grumman’s announcement is a devastating blow to the thousands of people who work at Avondale everyday and to the communities that support the shipyard. We know there are multiple communities and thousands of jobs at risk – and we are already exploring alternative uses for Avondale. In fact, we have been talking with potential buyers and tenants in order to secure employment levels at Avondale.
