United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., commented on today’s announcement by Northrop Grumman that they plan to close Avondale Shipyard by 2013.
Sen. Landrieu said:
“The state of Louisiana, under both the current and previous Administrations and through a unified Congressional delegation, has provided extraordinary support to Avondale Shipyard. Despite that support and the increased productivity of the employees at Avondale, Northrop Grumman has tragically chosen to turn its back on Louisiana and thousands of workers in the state. While the company might believe this decision will have a positive effect in the short term on its bottom line, the long-term consequences for Louisiana’s economy, our national security and Northrop Grumman itself will be devastating. In the coming days, I will strongly appeal to Secretary Mabus and Northrop Grumman leadership to reverse this short-sighted decision.”

WASHINGTON - The Obama Administration today sent a fourth bill for $99.7 million to BP and other responsible parties for response and recovery operations relating to the BP/Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
As a responsible party, BP is financially responsible for all costs associated with the response to the spill, including efforts to stop the leak at its source, reduce the spread of oil, protect the shoreline and mitigate damages, as well as long term recovery efforts to ensure that all individuals and communities impacted by the spill are made whole.
To provide full transparency of the ongoing efforts and to ensure that the American public is not held accountable for the costs of response and recovery activities, the Federal Government bills BP and the other responsible parties regularly for costs incurred by the Federal On-Scene Coordinator to support Federal, State, and local response efforts and ensure the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund is reimbursed on an ongoing basis.
This is the fourth bill the Administration has sent to date. BP and other responsible parties have paid the first three bills, totaling $122.3 million, in full.
Louisiana Governor Jindal, Senator Mary Landrieu, Senator David Vitter and Congressman Charlie Melancon have all issued statements concerning the new US government and Obama administration new Gulf of Mexico Oil drilling moratorium that was announced on Monday.
Melancon and Vitter are opponents for the seat of US Senator.
Jindal and Vitter are republicans and Landrieu and Melancon are democrats.
The Obama administration will issue a new Gulf oil moratorium on deepwater offshore drilling on Monday.
Last week, a federal appeals court panel in New Orleans denied the US government’s request to restore the Obama administration’s moratorium which went into effect in June due to the BP Oil Spill.
The Obama administration had threatened that a new moratorium would be coming after Judge Feldman of the United States District Court overturned the intial moratorium.
(Baton Rouge) Today, Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Claude “Buddy” Leach, Jr. announced that St John Parish native Renee Lapeyrolerie has been named the party’s Executive Director. As Executive Director, Lapeyrolerie will manage day-to-day operations and head up the Louisiana Democratic Party’s efforts heading in to the fall elections.
“Renee Lapeyrolerie understands Louisiana politics, has extensive experience building coalitions and solid vision for the future,” Leach said. “The Louisiana Democratic Party is lucky to have found such a talented and smart young woman to help lead our party.”

Every once in a while those following Louisiana politics get pounded with a barrage of news making heads spin.
However, this past Friday was indeed such a day.
As the candidates ended the three days of qualifying, unquestionably the story leading the pack was the US Senate race now with sixteen candidates wanting David Vitter’s seat in Washington.

Believe it or not, the Nagin administration was worse than we imagined. The administration’s incompetence, mismanagement, embarrassments, and lack of leadership were well known by local observers. Yet, until Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s speech last week, we did not know the extent of the city’s fiscal mess.
As Landrieu outlined last week, the city has a budget deficit of $67 million, which he will have to address through severe budget cuts. A $72 million reserve fund is now gone, with very little to show for it. The fiscal mismanagement was mind boggling and included huge technology contracts and wasteful spending on such items as storage for unused furniture.
Incumbent US Senator David Vitter has 16 challenges in his race for re-election. Here are also the unofficial list of candidates for Louisiana election
